Zirconia
Zirconia (ZrO2) by plasma spraying is used mainly as refractory barrier at higher temperatures. Zirconium oxide is mechanically oriented material, the crystallographic evolution confers a very high hardness (1200 HV) and a good resistance to mechanical stress (700 MPa tensile and 2000 MPa in compression). Tetragonal zirconia can be ground and polished to a roughness index Ra of 0.2. The intrinsic thermal properties of zirconia make this material a very attractive candidate for the production of various devices, such as thermal barriers.
